COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Georgetown County’s former economic development director has been charged with embezzlement of public funds.
The sheriff’s office says 36-year-old Wayne Gregory took more than $100,000 from the county for his own use. Gregory was Georgetown County’s economic development director from 2005 to 2013.
He was fired by Columbia City Manager Teresa Wilson on Tuesday. Gregory had been hired as Columbia’s economic development director last year. Wilson has ordered a review of Gregory’s work in Columbia.
The Georgetown sheriff’s office said the money was taken between January 2010 and last September.
Georgetown County spokeswoman Jackie Broach said the county is reviewing its policies for the use of its credit cards and has hired a consultant to see if they can be strengthened.
It was not clear if Gregory has a lawyer.
