ATLANTA (AP) - Former Ambassador Mary Ann Peters has been named CEO of The Carter Center, the Atlanta-based not-for-profit organization founded by former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn.

The center’s Board of Trustees announced the appointment this week. Peters will succeed longtime CEO John Hardman in September.

Peters has been provost of the U.S. Naval War College since 2008 and before that spent more than 30 years with the State Department.

She served as ambassador to Bangladesh from 2000 to 2003. During her tenure with the State Department, she worked in countries including Bulgaria, Russia and Burma.

Carter said in a statement that Peters’ “commitment to world peace and human rights and her diplomatic expertise bring principled and experienced leadership to the Center’s critical mission to secure basic human rights worldwide.”
