WASHINGTON (AP) - The District of Columbia’s Democratic mayoral nominee says she’s taking nothing for granted as she prepares for the general election and that the party needs to come together to ensure her victory in November.
D.C. Councilmember Muriel Bowser defeated Mayor Vincent Gray in Tuesday’s Democratic primary, capitalizing on voters’ weariness of an ongoing scandal surrounding Gray’s 2010 campaign.
She faces independent Councilmember David Catania in what could be an unusually competitive general election. The Democratic nominee has won every general election since district voters began electing their own mayor 40 years ago.
Bowser said at a news conference Wednesday that she will work to bring Democrats together and she would welcome the support of the outgoing mayor, although she did not pledge to back him if he won the primary.
