NEW YORK (AP) - Health officials want to tighten scrutiny of the thousands of water tanks on New York City building rooftops.
The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/RxHoI8 ) says in a story published Saturday that the city Health Department plans a hearing Monday on a proposal to require landlords to submit annual tank inspection records. Now, they’re required to have the tanks cleaned and tested once a year, but they don’t have to turn in results unless requested.
In January, the Times reported that water tower regulations were rarely enforced. The newspaper’s own tests found some tanks contained bacteria considered that make water unfit for human consumption, under state and federal standards.
At the time, a health official defended the city’s water testing program as vigorous.
There are 12,000 to 17,000 water towers citywide.
