HONOLULU (AP) - The U.S. Department of Labor says a department store in American Samoa has agreed to pay nearly $120,000 in back wages to more than 250 employees.
The department said Friday Manua’s Inc. paid newly hired employees a flat daily rate of $20 even when they worked eight or more hours each day.
The department says Manua’s failed to pay workers time worked past the end of their scheduled shift or during their lunch period.
The workers were employed at stores in Tafuna, Pago Pago and Maleimi from September through January.
Wage and Hour Division district director Terence Trotter says new employees are entitled to at least minimum wage. He says all employees should be paid not just for their weekly scheduled hours but for the time they actually worked.
