A vice principal who was pulled from the sinking South Korean ferry was found dead Friday, hanging from a tree.

He was identified only by his surname Kang, police said. Authorities discovered his body dangling from a tree on the island of Jindo, where some of the rescued survivors of the sinking ferry have been transported, The Associated Press reported.

So far, authorities have confirmed 28 deaths from the ferry disaster, which occurred Wednesday. Most of the passengers — 325 of them — were students at Danwon High School who were traveling to an island off the southern tip of the country for a four-day trip, AP said.

Two-hundred and seventy ferry passengers are still unaccounted for, police said.

No other details about the vice principal were released.
