DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - Northern Illinois and coach Mark Montgomery have agreed to a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2017-18 season.

The deal was announced Friday. It comes after Montgomery led the Huskies to their biggest single-season turnaround. They went 15-17 in his third year, a 10-win improvement from 2012-13.

Athletic director Sean Frazier says in a statement Montgomery has “changed the culture of the program” and is confident “we’ll continue to take this program where we want it to be, which is to the top of the MAC and beyond.”
