ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - The not-for-profit foundation hoping to relaunch the Empire State Games intends to disband.
The Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester reports (https://on.rocne.ws/1itwnkx ) that the Empire State Sports Foundation filed papers in state court this month stating its intention to cease operations. The papers say the foundation owes $158,000 to creditors.
The organization had hoped to revive the games in Rochester this year.
The Olympic-style summer games were started in 1978 and feature thousands of New Yorkers competing in various athletic events. But state budget problems have scratched the games for several summers.
The separate Empire State Winter Games continue to be held annually.
