SMYRNA, Del. (AP) - Corrections officials say an inmate has died shortly after arriving at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna.

The Department of Corrections says 26-year-old Jason Cunningham of Dover died Wednesday night at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital. Officials say Cunningham had arrived at the Vaughn prison earlier Wednesday.

Cunningham was being held in default of bail on charges that included theft and menacing.

His body was turned over to the State Medical Examiner’s Office, as is standard procedure. The corrections department and medical examiner are conducting an investigation into Cunningham’s death.
