BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Burlington School District is expecting to be fined for late payment and nonpayment of payroll taxes.

It’s currently answering inquiries from the Internal Revenue Service.

City Chief Administrative Officer Bob Rusten says the total amount of penalties has not been determined.

Letters obtained by the Burlington Free Press (https://bfpne.ws/1iuzxo6 ) from the IRS say the city owes different amounts of penalties and taxes.

The newspaper says a March 31 letter says Burlington owes $114,662 as a penalty for “failure to make a proper federal tax deposit” for the tax period that ended September 2013.

The city may be able to negotiate with the IRS once a penalty has been determined.
