EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University has received $5 million to increase its endowment and help fund exhibitions for the next five years, officials announced Friday.
The donation is from The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation in honor of Michael Rush, the museum’s founding director. The Broads have now given a total of $33 million to the museum, including a $28 million lead gift for its design and construction, as well as gifts of art.
“The exhibitions presented at the museum provide opportunities for students and the community to experience art that they might otherwise never see, while simultaneously drawing new visitors to East Lansing,” Eli Broad, a billionaire philanthropist, said in a statement from the museum.
The $40 million museum opened in 2012. Also called Broad MSU, it’s dedicated to exploring global contemporary culture and ideas through art.
“The exhibitions we develop at Broad MSU complement and add to Michigan State University’s globally focused mission, and we often work with artists in countries where MSU has already developed programs,” Rush said. “This new endowment gift will allow us to continue this type of programming well into the future.”
Since opening, more than 125,000 people have visited the museum for 32 exhibitions. On campus, the museum has worked to develop programs that engage students from across academic disciplines. More than 70 students also work at the museum.
“This new endowment gift will ensure the museum can continue to advance its mission through engaging exhibitions,” said university President Lou Anna K. Simon. “We are grateful to Eli and Edythe Broad for their continued generosity and support.”
