HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - The Army Corps of Engineers is reminding boaters about restricted areas near navigation dams on the Ohio and Kanawha rivers.

Officials say a number of boating accidents have occurred in the past when vessels entered the restricted areas immediately upstream and downstream of the rivers.

According to the Corps’ Huntington district, the restricted areas are very dangerous because of strong currents and possible whirlpools. Boaters and swimmers who enter these areas risk their lives and property.

Officials also say to heed warning signs and buoys around the locks and dams and always wear a life jacket.
