An earthquake of an estimated 7.5 magnitude hit southern Mexico on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake occurred at 9:27 a.m. local time (10:27 a.m. EST) near the country’s Pacific coast, about 37 kilometers north of the city of Tecpan, and it is unclear if it harmed anyone or caused significant damage.
The USGS says the earthquake, recorded at a depth of 48.6 kilometers, does not mark a rare occurrence in Mexico.
“Located atop three of the large tectonic plates, Mexico is one of the world’s most seismically active regions,” according to the survey.
