PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - A Prince George County man who found thousands of dollars’ worth of savings bonds in a boat seat has returned them to their owner.

John Baxter located Shirley Brown after WRIC-TV (https://bit.ly/1jMGj8k ) aired a report about his discovery.

Baxter estimates the bonds are worth at least $25,000. Some date to 1967. He found them a couple of days ago while cleaning up part of his yard.

He tells WRIC that a friend gave him an old boat last year. He later sold it but kept several items and stored them in his yard.

Brown is the niece of the bonds’ original owners, Samuel and Mabel Finney of Petersburg. She says she inherited the bonds after her aunt and uncle died. But they were stolen during a break-in five years ago.
