PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The state Board of Elections is seeking legislation that would repeal an annual campaign contribution limit on individuals to candidates, party committees and political action committees.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/P7RmOg ) the board voted Wednesday. Contribution limits are $10,000.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority ruled 5-to-4 on April 2 that federal limits on the amount an individual can give to political candidates and committees violates free speech.
Raymond A. Marcaccio, the board’s lawyer, says contribution limits in Rhode Island will be subject to a constitutional challenge. He says elections officials should support legislation seeking the repeal of that portion of the state’s campaign law.
John Marion, executive director of Common Cause Rhode Island, said eight or nine states have overall limits that will likely fall if challenged in court.
