SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Spokane is taking over operation of the city incinerator that burns waste to generate electricity.

Mayor David Condon advised Wheelabrator Technologies on Wednesday that the city won’t renew a contract worth about $21 million a year.

The Spokesman-Review reports (https://bit.ly/QgojJF) the city hopes to save money by operating the plant itself. The city owns the plant but contracted with Wheelabrator in 1989 to design, build and operate it.
