COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina men and women are walking a mile in high heels to bring attention to the scourge of sexual abuse and violence against women.

Thursday’s event starts at 6:30 p.m. outside the Statehouse in Columbia and is sponsored by Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands.

The 5th annual rally is held to counter sexual violence and raise awareness of the free, local services provided to survivors of sexual assault.

According to national crime statistics, South Carolina often ranks in the top five states where females are murdered by males.

Men, women, and children of all ages are invited to participate, individually or in teams.

Participants are asked to bring their own shoes and are invited to decorate them in bright colors and designs.
