RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Diocese of Richmond is reaching out to disaffected or lapsed parishioners as part of a push to reinvigorate the local church.

Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo says there will be an increased focus on reaching parishioners who’ve left the church and those who don’t believe.

Other efforts include bolstering Catholic schools, recruiting priests and raising donations.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1ns5Btj ) reports that church officials discussed these efforts Wednesday during a news conference.

The diocese has begun offering scholarships to address a decline in enrollment in Catholic schools. Chief education administrator Annette Parsons says a recent study found that students were leaving because their parents couldn’t afford the education.

The Diocese of Richmond serves 116 of Virginia’s 142 counties and cities.
