The man who lied to us about keeping our health plans if we liked them has outdone himself by telling us that there was not even “a smidgen of corruption” involved when the IRS targeted conservative groups during the 2012 presidential campaign.

Newly released emails made available through the Freedom of Information Act show that former IRS official Lois Lerner and colleagues were discussing with the Justice Department how to make “examples out of nonprofit groups that they felt were violating campaign laws by playing political roles” (“IRS emails reveal discussion with Justice about suing nonprofits,” Web, April 16).

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus has said his organization is now suing the IRS because of harassment and discrimination against Tea Party and other conservative groups. This persecution, he said, inhibited these organizations’ exercise of the First Amendment right to countercampaign against President Obama in the 2012 election cycle.

Putting impeachment aside for a minute, how is it that given this bombshell that resembles a communist, Kremlin-like attack on the Constitution, Mr. Obama — whether he had knowledge of it or not — can continue to govern? As President Harry Truman famously said, “The buck stops here.” In the wake of this unpardonable scandal, Mr. Obama should be drafting his resignation letter.

Mr. Obama’s 2012 electoral win is now so tainted that I view him as tantamount to steroid-taking baseball players who blew up the record books by cheating. If Mr. Obama has even a shred of dignity within him, he should resign and go quietly into the night.
