TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) - A journalist and author who previously worked as a speechwriter for New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is delivering an annual lecture at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.

John Avlon will speak Thursday afternoon in the university’s Webb Auditorium.

Avlon is editor in chief of The Daily Beast news website and the author of “Independent Nation: How Centrists Can Change American Politics” and “Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America.”

As the chief speechwriter for Giuliani following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Avlon and his team wrote eulogies for all the firefighters and police officers killed at the World Trade Center.

The event is free and open to the public.
