Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, who lost his bid for the White House in 2004, has returned to his original trade as a lawyer and launched a medical malpractice case on behalf of a 4-year-old Virginia boy.
Mr. Edwards and three other attorneys are representing the family of a boy who suffered brain damage and other physical injuries while in the care of Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Politico reported.
The former politician has been quiet since 2012, when he faced six different felony counts related to allegations he used political dollars to help hide his relationship with the then-pregnant Rielle Hunter, at a time when he was seeking the White House. The jury acquitted him of one and deadlocked on the other five charges. He was not retried.
Mr. Edwards was by and large regarded as a rising Democratic Party star while he served as senator from North Carolina between 1999 and 2005. He was ultimately selected as then-Sen. John Kerry’s vice presidential running mate in 2004, but both lost when President George W. Bush won the election.
