COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - The University of Maryland is proposing a $115 million luxury hotel and conference center next to campus.

The Washington Post reports (https://wapo.st/1eIvoxC ) that the four-star, 300-room hotel with conference space would be built on three acres by the main entrance in College Park.

University President Wallace Loh says scores of academic conferences are held in Baltimore or Washington annually because facilities near campus can’t accommodate them.

Last month, the Board of Public Works declared the land surplus and in the spring the university will seek approval to sell the land to the University of Maryland College Park Foundation, which plans to lease the property to Vienna, Va.-based Southern Management Corp. Southern Management Chief Executive David Hillman says if ground is broken next spring, the hotel could open in 2017.
