PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Former Rhode Island House Speaker William Murphy confirms he’s helping to represent his successor, Rep. Gordon Fox, in an investigation that has included law enforcement raids on Fox’s home and Statehouse office.

Murphy told The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/1gI2bBs) Wednesday he’s part of Fox’s legal team. Murphy commented as he left a House Finance Committee hearing on payday loan legislation that he attended as a lobbyist.

He declined to say if Fox is a target of the investigation that became known March 21 after raids by the FBI, IRS and state police.

Fox resigned as House speaker shortly after the raids, but remains a House member. He hasn’t commented on the investigation.

The director of the state Board of Elections told The Associated Press Wednesday it was contacted by law enforcement in the probe on March 21.
