WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) - A historic plantation near Williamsburg is going on the auction block.
Carter’s Grove is scheduled to be sold at auction May 21 as part of a bankruptcy case.
The 400-acre plantation was once a Colonial Williamsburg attraction. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation sold Carter’s Grove in 2007 to Halsey Minor for $15.3 million. Minor stopped making payments in the summer of 2010, and the foundation sought foreclosure. Minor’s Carter’s Grove LLC filed for bankruptcy protection in 2011.
An attorney for the foundation, Gregory N. Stillman, tells The Richmond Times-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1l18Jzc ) that the nonprofit is owed nearly $8 million.
The plantation is located on the north bank of the James River in James City County. Its brick mansion was built in 1755.
