BOSTON (AP) - Two challengers hoping to unseat Democratic U.S. Rep. John Tierney have been raising hefty sums of money during the first three months of the year as they look ahead to the fall elections, but the incumbent still had the most cash.
Republican Richard Tisei, a former state senator who narrowly lost to Tierney in 2012, reported raising $281,276 in the first quarter of the year. He ended March with $569,256 in his account.
Seth Moulton, a fellow Salem Democrat, is challenging Tierney in the party’s September primary. Moulton reported raising $454,399 in the first three months of 2014, ending March with $651,122 in his campaign account.
Moulton, a former U.S. Marine and Iraq War veteran, outpaced Tierney, who reported collecting $347,004 in the first quarter. Tierney still ended up with the most cash in his account as of the end of the March with $976,718.
Democrat Marisa DeFranco also is challenging Tierney.
In another closely watched contest in the state’s 9th Congressional District, incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. William Keating is trying to maintain a fundraising edge over two Republican challengers - Daniel Shores and John Chapman.
Keating collected $169,889 in the first three months of the year. He ended March with $508,579 in his campaign account.
Chapman, a former administration official for former Gov. Mitt Romney, raised $102,466 during the first quarter of the year, ending March with $119,421 in his account.
Shores, who runs a law practice in Sandwich, raised more than $48,239 and ended March with $176,017. He loaned his campaign $157,000.
The rest of the state’s all-Democratic delegation continued to stockpile despite facing little or no opposition this election cycle.
