Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez is being investigated behind bars over allegations that he threatened to kill a prison guard over a dispute over food.

A former inmate who served at the same Bristol County Jail with Hernandez has been brought into investigators’ offices and quizzed on his knowledge of the situation, The Daily Mail reported.

TMZ reported that the former inmate was specifically asked for the reasons Hernandez threatened the guard and whether he did so in order to score more food.

The former inmate said Hernandez, who’s worried about his weight loss, has been eating half his food and then planting a bug on the remainder as a way of getting a new serving. The guard reportedly discovered the plot and told supervisors — and that’s when Hernandez supposedly threatened to kill him and his family, investigators allege, TMZ reported.

The former inmate is being asked if he heard Hernandez say that when he gets out of jail, “[I’m] going to kill the guard and shoot his family” and then make sounds like a “machine gun round,” TMZ reported.

Hernandez is currently at the Massachusetts jail, awaiting his trial for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd.
