EMERGENCY MANAGERS CHALLENGED TO EDUCATE PUBLIC
Two of the country’s top disaster experts have challenged emergency managers and forecasters from Texas to Maine to help educate coastal residents and developers about hurricane hazards. National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb and Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Craig Fugate spoke Wednesday at the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando.
INTERNET RETAILER AMAZON TO START COLLECTING TAXES
Internet retailer Amazon.com is going to start collecting sales taxes on purchases made by Floridians. A spokesman for the company confirmed Wednesday that Amazon will begin to collect the state’s 6 percent sales taxes on May 1. The move follows the decision by Amazon to build distribution centers in the Sunshine State.
WILDLIFE OFFICIALS DEFEND BEAR KILLINGS
Florida wildlife officials are defending the killing of a half dozen bears following a bear attack on a Lake Mary woman. Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on Wednesday said they had no choice but to put down the bears instead of relocating them. They say there was nowhere the bears could go in Florida where they wouldn’t risk having contact with humans.
MIAMI-DADE POLICE ARREST 5 IN FAKE OFFICER CASE
Miami-Dade police officers arrested five men who were spotted in a vehicle changing into clothes and gear. The undercover unit stopped the vehicle and found hats and shirts with the word “police” on them, authentic-looking badges, handcuffs and other law enforcement items. They face multiple charges.
RACEHORSE STOLEN FROM STABLE NEAR TAMPA
Officials say a racehorse worth $15,000 has been stolen from its stable near Tampa. The 2-year-old horse named Six of Diamonds was taken Friday night or Saturday morning. The theft was discovered by one of the horse’s trainers.
