JACKSON, Mich. (AP) - In a story April 14 about an inmate who tried to kill himself, The Associated Press misspelled the man’s last name in one instance. The inmate’s name is Eric Knysz.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Official: Man who killed trooper tried suicide

Official: Man convicted of killing Michigan state trooper tried to kill himself in prison

JACKSON, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a man who was sentenced to life in prison last week for the slaying of a Michigan state trooper tried to kill himself.

MLive.com reports (https://bit.ly/1gXx2FY) that Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan said in an email that Eric Knysz (NIZE) tried to hang himself with a bed sheet Monday afternoon. Knysz was being held at a detention center in Jackson and Marlan says he was taken to a local hospital.

State Police Lt. Chris McIntire says Knysz was on a ventilator.

Knysz was convicted of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Trooper Paul Butterfield II in Mason County. He was sentenced last Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
