PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Maine panel has disciplined a lawyer accused of mishandling the response to the disclosure that home foreclosure documents were being signed without first being verified, a practice known as “robo-signing.”
The Portland Press Herald (https://bit.ly/1gzcmoE) reports that a grievance panel for the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar ordered a written reprimand against attorney Paul Peck.
The panel said he failed to take “immediate and effective action” after learning that a GMAC Mortgage employee was signing thousands of foreclosure documents without ensuring they were accurate. Peck is considering whether to appeal.
The panel issued a warning against Alexander Saksen of Pittsburgh, Pa., but dismissed the complaint against Saksen and Philip Mancini of Portland. It found that Mancini did nothing wrong.
Mancini has maintained his innocence and said Tuesday that a weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
