WASHINGTON (AP) - The D.C. Council will hear testimony on a package of bills meant to reform the city’s contracting process.
One bill would eliminate review by the council of contracts worth more than $1 million. Supporters say removing the council from the contracting process would prevent it from becoming politicized. But opponents say contract review is an important check on the mayor’s power.
Another bill would ban people who contribute to local elected officials from getting city contracts for one year after the election for which the contribution was made. It’s intended to end the practice and perception of “pay to play” in contracting.
Another bill would require that contractors submit more information about subcontractors.
The council’s Committee of the Whole will hear testimony on the bills on Tuesday.
