THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Thirty-six cooking students are returning to Nicholls State University after a week of work at the Masters golf tournament.
The Daily Comet (https://bit.ly/1eBhqYK) reports that they left for Augusta, Ga., on April 3 and were expected back in Thibodaux on Monday.
They worked in a wide range of support jobs such as pantry assistants and servers at the Augusta National Golf Club.
Some had a chance to work in the Champions Locker, where celebrity golfers eat.
Chef Randy Cheramie, the culinary institute’s executive director, said the golf club asked him about involving Nicholls students in the Masters and food service director John Johnstone visited to provide information to interested students.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for our culinary degree-seeking students to not only gain experience but also to boost their resume for when they enter the workforce after graduation,” said Louisiana Chef John Folse, the institute’s namesake.
The Masters is one of the four major championships held each year for professional golfers. The first Masters Tournament, originally called the Augusta National Invitational, was held March 22, 1934.
The Chef John Folse Culinary Institute is the only public university in Louisiana to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in culinary arts. Since its inception in 1996, the institute has awarded nearly 600 degrees.
