A Hollywood-area homeless man who was reportedly trying to take a shopping cart from a Sunset Boulevard store was shot and killed by police, who said he came at them with a knife.

Officers responded to a disturbance call at the 99 Cents Only store late Sunday afternoon, NBC Los Angeles reported. The man was allegedly outside the store, carting a knife, police said. The officers tried to use a stun gun on him, but “he continued to come at the officers,” and they opened fire, Los Angeles Police Department Cmdr. Dennis Kato said, in the NBC report.

A witness said he heard between three and four shots. Another person who lives nearby the store said the incident began after the homeless man argued with a security guard over a shopping cart.

“I feel for the guy that went down,” the witness said, NBC reported. “He died over like a shopping cart, so it sort of doesn’t make sense.”
