LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is proposing an $8.1 billion city budget that avoids layoffs or across-the-board tax increases while boosting spending - but there’s mixed news for taxpayers.
Garcetti’s proposal Monday would add $20 million to fix sidewalks. More firefighters would be hired and library hours would be expanded.
But the spending plan also would hike the admission price for the zoo and end free dips at city pools. If the City Council endorses the plan, it will cost $1 to jump in this summer.
Garcetti also wants to postpone a planned tax cut for business.
His proposal would increase spending by about $400 million above this year’s budget - about a 5 percent boost.
