GARY, W.Va. (AP) - A handgun reported stolen in New York City more than 40 years ago has been recovered in West Virginia during a traffic stop.
Gary Police Chief S.P. McKinney cited the male driver last week for not wearing a seat belt and discovered that he had a loaded .357 Magnum in the vehicle.
McKinney tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph (https://bit.ly/1iJfsYV ) that the man had a valid Virginia concealed carry permit. But a check of the gun revealed that it was reported stolen in New York City on April 26, 1967.
McKinney says he didn’t charge the man regarding the gun. He says the man didn’t have any criminal involvement in that case.
He says he contacted the New York City Police Department to report that the gun had been recovered.
