NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A funeral service for Nuala Pell, wife of the late Sen. Claiborne Pell, has been scheduled next week in Newport.

Pell died Sunday at Newport Hospital at age 89.

Her son, Toby Pell, said Monday his mother had been in failing health but died peacefully after “a wonderful life.”

Nuala Pell was active into her later years, including in politics. She was with her grandson, Clay Pell and his wife, figure skater Michelle Kwan, when he announced he was running for governor in January.

Toby Pell said, “My mother was at the center of things. We will miss her.”

Her funeral is set for 11 a.m. April 21 at Trinity Episcopal Church. Pell said his mother was “very much a traditionalist” and the service will be in keeping with that.
