NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A petition with more than 22,000 signatures calls on Newark Archbishop John Myers to sell his retirement home that he’s expanding with a $500,000 addition.
The group Faithful America collected the signatures online.
Myers celebrated Palm Sunday mass at Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. But he did not meet with the group.
His spokesman accepted the petition.
Jim Goodness tells The Star-Ledger of Newark (https://bit.ly/Q5Z9Nw ) the diocese plans to see who is making the request.
Goodness says the construction of the home in Hunterdon County is being financed by the sale of another property and private donations. Goodness says there are no plans to make any changes for when Myers retires in two years.
Atlanta’s archbishop recently agreed to sell his $2 million home after parishioners complained.
