TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Fred W. Enke, a former three-sport star at Arizona who later was a quarterback on three NFL teams, has died.
University officials announced Monday that Enke died Sunday at age 89. No cause was immediately disclosed.
Enke led the NCAA in total offense as the Wildcats’ quarterback with 1,941 total yards in 1947 with 1,406 of the yards coming on passes.
He was the son of the school’s Hall of Fame basketball coach Fred A. Enke and helped Arizona win three consecutive Border Conference basketball championships in 1946-48.
Enke also captained the Wildcats’ baseball team in 1948 and hit .345 that season.
He played seven seasons in the NFL as a quarterback for Detroit (1948-51), Philadelphia (1952) and Baltimore (1953-54) and had 4,169 total yards passing and 640 yards rushing.
