SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) - Officials on eastern Long Island are investigating the death of a 15-foot pilot whale that washed up on a beach in Southampton.

The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation is conducting a necropsy to try and determine how the whale died.

Newsday (https://bit.ly/1nmLdd2 ) reports it was found Sunday on a beach near Cryder Lane in Southampton.

Experts are looking for any outward signs that the whale may have been injured. After the examination, it was to be buried on the beach.

Rob DiGiovanni of the Riverhead Foundation says one or two pilot whales wash ashore each year on Long Island beaches.
