11-year-old NC baseball player hit by line drive, later dies

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A middle school baseball player from Wilmington has died after being hit by a line drive during practice.

New Hanover County school officials say that Alex Newsome, an 11-year-old pitcher, was throwing batting practice Friday afternoon at Roland-Grise Middle School when he was hit in the head.

Coaches performed CPR on the youth until emergency crews arrived but he died a few hours later at an area hospital.

The district said it would have counselors available for students or school staff members who need it.
