EMPIRE, Mich. (AP) - Construction gets underway this spring to complete a bicycle trail between Glen Arbor and Empire in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle (https://bit.ly/1m0DTGq ) says construction is set to begin on the second section of the 27-mile Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, with work done by the end of June.

Facilities manager Lee Jameson says it’s “the first trail in the lakeshore that provides multi-use capabilities” and will be great for biking and sightseeing.

The 5.5-mile second segment runs from northern Empire to the dune climb.

The Sleeping Bear Dunes federal park is headquartered at Empire along Lake Michigan in the northern Lower Peninsula. On March 13, President Barack Obama signed legislation making 32,557 acres of the park a protected federal wilderness.
