BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Police in Burlington, Vt., say a 9-year-old boy who may have been distracted while using a cellphone was hurt when he crashed his skateboard into the back of a car.

The crash happened Saturday evening. Police say the boy, who was not wearing a helmet or other protective items, sustained multiple injuries, including bruises, scrapes and a possible broken hand and leg.

Vermont police say the crash is a reminder that skaters should wear protective gear and that drivers need to stick around after accidents even if they’re not at fault. Police are still investigating, but say criminal charges are likely against the adult driver because she failed to stay on the scene until police arrived.
