MANCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A worker is recovering from serious injuries after he was pinned under a 5,000-pound roll of steel at an upstate New York factory.

The Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester reports (https://on.rocne.ws/1gSZvNi ) that the accident happened Friday at Pacemaker Steel and Piping in Manchester, in Ontario County.

The newspaper says 48-year-old John Washburn of Palmyra became trapped by three bundles of rolled steel.

Two of them were removed by co-workers using a crane but a third remained atop one of his legs.

Firefighters needed 40 minutes to free Washburn. He was flown to a hospital in Rochester.

Sheriff’s deputies said Washburn was in guarded condition Saturday with leg injuries and possible internal injuries.

The sheriff’s office and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the accident.
