NAPLES, Fla. (AP) - Volunteers are helping state wildlife officials build trash can sheds that bears can’t get into.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is partnering with local Boys Scouts for the event on Saturday in Naples.
A commission statement says it received a grant from the Wildlife Foundation of Florida, using proceeds from the Conserve Wildlife license plate to purchase materials for the sheds. The group hopes to build and install 70 wooden sheds for residents living in two communities in the Naples area. The mobile home communities don’t have garages or other structures where residents can keep their trash cans during the week and prevent black bears from getting to it.
The Boy Scouts will earn their woodworking merit badge after the project.
