SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Santa Fe has made big strides when it comes to water conservation, but Mayor Javier Gonzales wants to do more.

Gonzales is joining mayors across the country in asking residents to make a commitment to conserve water by taking part in a national contest to see what city can be the most water-wise community.

The mayor says Santa Fe’s water-use statistics are already some of the lowest in the Southwest.

City water customers have reduced their use by 38 percent from 1995 to 2013. Daily residential water use is 58 gallons per person, ranking Santa Fe among the nation’s most frugal cities.

Santa Fe and other New Mexico municipalities have been forced to impose strict water conservation measures in recent years as the state struggles with drought.
