CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago’s mayor is inviting young immigrants in the United States illegally to apply for internships, volunteer positions and summer jobs.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office announced Friday that the so-called dreamers are welcome to apply for nearly 23,000 positions.

The “dreamers” take their name from the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, or DREAM Act, which is stalled in Congress and would provide a way for them to permanently remain in the United States. The law’s opponents say it would reward illegal immigration.

Emanuel says the city should support “talented young people who are committed to their education, building their job skills, and bettering their communities.”

City staff will get training on helping immigrant students receive accurate and helpful information about opportunities available to them.
