DETROIT (AP) - Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is being honored this weekend in Detroit as one of two Arab Americans of the Year.

LaHood is scheduled to accept the award Saturday at the 43rd annual dinner of Dearborn-based ACCESS. The longtime Republican congressman from Illinois and President Barack Obama’s first transportation secretary.

Also being honored is Fawwaz Ulaby, a recipient of the Thomas Edison Medal and electrical engineering and computer science professor at the University of Michigan.

ACCESS says the awards “celebrate the achievements of extraordinary Arab Americans.”

Other expected guests are Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

Individual tickets are $100 for the dinner at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center.

The organization was founded as the Arab American Community Center for Economic and Social Services.
