JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Here are projections for the acreage Mississippi farmers are expected to plant this year compared to 2013 plantings. The projections are from a U.S. Department of Agriculture survey. Farmers could shift crop choices depending on weather and projected prices.
Crop Plantings Change from 2013
- Corn: 580,000 acres, down 33 percent from 860,000 acres
- Cotton: 380,000 acres, up 31 percent from 290,000 acres
- Hay: 710,000 acres, down 1 percent from 720,000 acres
- Peanuts: 45,000 acres, up 32 percent from 34,000 acres
- Rice: 170,000 acres, up 36 percent from 125,000 acres
- Sorghum: 70,000 acres, up 8 percent from 65,000 acres
- Soybeans: 2.15 million acres in 2014, up 7 percent from 2 million acres
- Sweet potatoes: 23,000 acres, up 15 percent from 20,000 acres
- Wheat: 230,000 acres, down 42 percent from 400,000 acres
