BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Health Department is reminding pet owners to vaccinate their animals against rabies after four rabid raccoons were found in Chittenden County.
The four animals were trapped in Burlington and South Burlington.
Officials on Friday also reminded people not to attract wild animals with food, compost, bird seed or exposed trash.
The Health Department says 11 cases of rabies have been recorded this year among raccoons, skunks and one bobcat in Clarendon.
No human cases have been reported to the state Health Department since the disease was first recorded in Vermont in 1963.
Officials say once the signs of rabies appear, there is no treatment and the disease is almost always fatal.
