NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a northern New Jersey doctor on federal tax charges.

Dr. Medhat El Amir of Saddle River owns a controlling interest in Immediate Care health service facilities at three locations in Hudson County.

Prosecutors say the doctor deposited more than $5.8 million from his business into bank accounts he controlled. Prosecutors say he also used the money to pay for personal expenses.

They also allege he fraudulently transferred ownership of his home to his sister for $2.5 million to keep the property out of the hands of the IRS.

He’s charged with tax evasion, failure to file tax returns and endeavoring to impede the internal revenue code.

An initial court appearance is scheduled Friday afternoon in Newark.

It’s not known if he has a lawyer.
