HAMILTON, Ga. (AP) - The Harris County school board in west Georgia has appointed James D. Martin its new superintendent.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (https://bit.ly/1hy4b0O) that Martin was named superintendent with the board’s unanimous vote on Thursday.

Martin, the superintendent of the Chattahoochee County School District, begins his duties in Harris County on July 1.

Martin was the only finalist considered to fill the position left vacant by the Dec. 31 retirement of Superintendent Craig Dowling.

The school system is based in Hamilton, about 20 miles northeast of Columbus.
